Apprenticeships

What is an Apprenticeship?

A Local 43 apprenticeship combines on-the-job and classroom training. This allows you, as the apprentice to actually earn while you learn. As an apprentice, you will work year-round for electrical contractors, and attend classroom sessions during the academic year. As you learn by doing, you are paid directly by the contractor with which you are employed. While progressing through the training, you receive guaranteed promotion and pay raises.

What basic requirements must I meet to qualify?

You must be:

  • ... at least 17 years of age to apply, 18 to work
  • ... a resident within 25 miles of the IBEW Local 43 Jurisdictional line. Please use this link to view Local 43 Jurisdictional Map.
  • ... a high school graduate or possess a GED (GED copies required when applicable)
  • ... able to show proof of the successful completion of one year of high school algebra
  • ... able to provide an official transcript for high school and any post high school education and training within 30 days of application
  • ... able to achieve a qualifying score on an aptitude test given by the ETA

    Note:
The aptitude test is by appointment only and will be scheduled by the CNYETA following the receipt of your official high school transcripts.
A testing fee of $20.00 is payable prior to the date of the test via this website. We will provide a payment link and additional test information after we have received your High School or GED paperwork.

Applicants who have met the above requirements will be interviewed by the CNYETA. Apprentices will then be selected in order of their final ranking without discrimination.

How do I apply ?

Click here for a link to the Apprenticeship Application. BUT please continue reading before you apply, as the following are instructions you must follow after you’ve applied and the instructions below will ensure your application is processed in a timely manner.

After You Have Applied:
The next thing that you need to do is forward your Official High School Transcript to our office within 30 days of submission.
If we do not receive your official transcript within those 30 days, your application is automatically purged from our system and you will need to start the application process all over again.

To forward your official high school transcript, simply call the high school that you attended and ask the school to send the transcript to:

Central New York ETA
4566 Waterhouse Road
Clay, NY 13041
Attn: Admissions

NOTE: If you did not graduate from High School, it is necessary for you to submit a copy of your GED.

College transcripts, Military DD214 and any applicable certificates can also be sent to the above address.

When the pertinent information has been received by the ETA, your application will be processed. Assuming you meet the minimum qualifications, your application will then be considered for the next available ETA/AIR Aptitude Test.

Aptitude testing takes place monthly. You will be notified of this by mail. Testing fee is $20.00, payable via online payment prior to the day of the test.

With a qualifying score on the aptitude test the ETA Committee will then grant you an oral interview. Interviews are held anywhere from 30-90 days after the aptitude testing.

All applicants interviewed by the ETA Committee will be placed on a ranking list in order of their interview score. Your ranking is provisional, as the application process is continuous and directly affected by each applicant as they are added to or removed from the list.

The ranking list determines the order in which new apprentices are called to be indentured into the program.

If selected, a drug screen with a negative result is required. Apprentices are called to work according to the industry needs. When contractors need additional help, a request is placed with the Training Director. When the need is too great for the existing workforce, new apprentices are contacted to come to work. This does not necessarily coincide with the Academic Year.

An Academic Year is approximately from September through June. This is when all apprentices are required to attend scheduled classroom training.

Classes are held at 4566 Waterhouse Road in Clay, New York. Apprentices will attend classroom training (unpaid) one (1) day per week during the academic year, spending the other four (4) days on job sites earning an hourly wage while learning the trade.

All apprentices are expected to work five (5) days per week when school is not in session. This schedule is subject to change in the future. For a complete and current wage scale, refer to the FAQ Page.
